Team Icarus Ballooning

Icarus

Drawing inspiration from Greek legend and Kansas (the band, not the state) Icarus is the flagship balloon of Team Icarus Ballooning. She is a Falcon II built by the Avian Balloon Company, and has a volume of 60,000 cubic feet (which is rather small by balloon standards).

Chief Pilot

Eric "Rocky" Wiggins grew up around hot air balloons. He earned his pilot certificate in 2016, becoming the youngest balloon pilot in the state of Mississippi. Eric purchased his first balloon, Icarus, at the Waffle House in Decatur, Alabama in 2017 and has been flying ever since.

Where We Fly

While you can find this little blue balloon flying all over the southeast, Team Icarus Ballooning calls central Mississippi home. Follow us on Facebook to see when we'll be in your area!

The Legend of Icarus

Icarus was the son of the master craftsman Daedalus, the creator of the Labyrinth. Icarus and his father were imprisoned on Crete by King Minos. They attempted to escape from the island by means of wings that Daedelus constructed from feathers and wax. Daedelus warned Icarus first of complacency and then of hubris asking that he fly neither too low nor too high, so the sea's dampness would not clog his wings or the sun's heat melt them. Icarus did not heed his father's warning, and continued to fly higher and higher. The heat of the sun melted his wings and he tumbled out of the sky, landing in the sea that now bears his name.

TLDR

Hubris and complacency get in the way of safe flying

The Kansas Connection

Icarus (Borne on Wings of Steel)

Early in the morning sunlight
Soaring on the wings of dawn
Here I'll live and die with my wings in the sky
And I, I won't come down no more

Higher than the birds I'm flyin'
Crimson skies of ice and fire
Borne on wings of steel I have so much to feel
And I, I won't come down no more

Sail on, sail on, I will rise each day to meet the dawn
So high, so high
I've climbed the mountains of the sky
Without my wings you know I'd surely die
I've found my freedom flyin' high
I've climbed the mountains of the sky

Floating on the clouds of amber
Searching for the rainbow's end
Earth so far below me, I'm here alone
And I, I won't come down no more (no more)

Sail on, sail on, I will rise each day to meet the dawn
So high, so high
I've climbed the mountains of the sky
Without my wings you know I'd surely die
I've found my freedom flyin' high
I've climbed the mountains of the sky
